Fagus Factory - UNESCO World Heritage Site Jan 15, 2017
If you would be asked to name Germany's UNESCO World Heritage sites, the first names coming into your mind would surely includes Palaces, Churches and medieval town centres. Surely one of the last to br named is Alfeld's Fagus Factory which is often seen as the first modern factory building in the world. While functional architecture of the early 20th century almost always included the use of massive brickwork, Gropius (an architect who would later become famous with several designs in and around Berlin) used large windows in his first own design. Indeed, the Fagus factory building was the first in the world with windows overlapping over the corners.

Fagus - a company producing shoe lasts - is still in business today and uses the very same building from 1911. However, it wasn't until the late 1970s that the architectural value of the building was recognized in a way that it was preserved for future generations.

In 2004, it became an UNESCO World Heritage Site and a visitors centre was built. However, the main thing is the highly recommended exhibition in the former warehouse which goes over five floors. The exhbition does not only include architectural and company history. They also show Gropius' design of furniture and put it in context of early 20th century art movements like Bauhaus and De Stijl. Shoe producing and wood processing have their dedicated part in the exhibition. Heck, they made even one of the most unsexy products - shoe lasts - interesting!

Plant 2 to 3 hours for the excellent main exhibition (German and English) and 30 minutes for the UNESCO WHS visitor centre. 8 EUR is the ticket price for an adult, cincessions apply. The UNESCO WHS visitor centre is free and includes a lot of multimedia info. Here (but not in the main exhibition) information is also available in French and Spanish as well.
