The traditional Bizcochos (biscuits) at the famous San Pedro Oven Aug 16, 2009
Cayambe most famous "dish" actually dessert is the "Bizcocho". It's a buttery and flaky biscuit. It's slightly crunchy and not sweet, a bit salty though. They are very good when they are warm, otherwise they could be greasy.
Since we were in Cayambe, we wanted to go to the best place possible for this bizcochos. After asking someone in the main square, we got the exact location of "Fabrica de Bizcochos San Pedro". They are one of the most popular spots for bizcochos. Along the whole town, you will see many bakeries offering these biscuits. But this place is the most traditional one. They also have the largest and oldest oven in town, which you can visit. Next to the oven there are some tables and you can see hanging on the walls pictures from the different people that ate here, including Ecuadorian politicians, singers, and even Miss Ecuador, haha. So, this is a famous place. Don't miss trying the "queso de hoja", which is a local cheese similar to mozzarella and matches very good with the bizcocho. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the bizcochos. Not much into buttery biscuits, but can't deny they were good. Having them warm with a good cup of coffee, sounds tempting. From Quito we drove to a haçienda near Cayambe. Very pretty but a little dull and very chilly plus rather expensive. We did have the option of horseriding but decided to wait until we were amongst the gauchos of Argentina.
After lunch we hopped on…… Hacienda visit near Cayambe and equatorial high-jinks |
