Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano that stopped europe Oct 03, 2010
Eyjafjallajökull, a volcano thats difficult to spell and worse - difficult to pronouce and by all means halted air traffic all over europe for a full week and erupted continously for almost a month!
eyjafjallajökull can be seen from the ring road of iceland (a road that circles the whole country) about 2-2.5 hours from reykjavik. From the road and given clear weather - the majestic peak of the glacier volcano can be visibly seen. Alhtough it is only 1,666 meters high, it rises upward from sea level (its only around 3 kms from the sea) so it looks higher because of the prominence of the mountain itself.
from the volcano - there are lots of waterfalls that sprung from the glacier - the famous and well-known ones are skógafoss for which a path that leads to fimmvörðuháls - a ridge that narrowly separates eyjafjallajökull and mýrdalsjökull glaciers and the site of the first eruption of the volcano before the big one. The next waterfall is called seljalandsfoss - it is a waterfall where you can go around it and according to icelandic superstition - make a wish while walking around it.
when you are in iceland and given really good weather (which is very rare) do not miss to drive and stop to see eyjafjallajökull glacier and volcano, the intensity just to see it is awe inspiring as little as it is - the eruption costed hundreds of millions of euros from the airspace industry of europe. The glacier and ice cap at the top of the volcano probably wont last that long - as it one of the thinnest glaciers in iceland.
there are lots of tours that operates and options to have a 4x4 or a snowmobile day trip expedition to eyjafjallajökull but prepare to shell out money because it costs between 250 - 600 euros.
