Eyam is known as the Plague Village - in late 1665, some cloth was sent from London to a tailor who lived in the village of Eyam. The cloth however was infected with Bubonic Plague and the tailor, George Vicars, died a few days later.

The Plague quickly spread throughout Eyam and before it died out in 1666, a total of 257 people had died out of an original population of 350.

The rector of the Eyam Church, William Mompesson, persuaded the villagers to stay within the village -- a self-imposed quarantine -- to prevent the Plague from spreading. It worked, the Plague didn't spread outside Eyam.

Many houses have plaques on the front detailing the people that died there.

A remembrance service is still held every Plague Sunday (the last Sunday in August) at nearby Cucklett Delf, the place where Mompesson held services during the Plague.

There is a small museum in the village detailing the history of the Plague. The museum is closed on Mondays, except Bank Holidays.

Eyam Church (St. Lawrence's) has some artefacts relating to the Plague, including Rector Mompesson's chair, the Parish Register recording the deaths and some gravestones of Plague victims -- Mompesson's wife Catherine, who died in the Plague, is buried here. Address: Church Street, Eyam

During the Plague, food and medicine was left for the villagers on a hill on the Parish boundary -- much of it was given freely, but when paid for, the coins were put in a well where the running water disinfected them or sometimes the coins were put in holes with vinegar on them.

Directions: Mompesson's Well can be reached by taking the path alongside the churchyard, across fields to a road - turn right along the road and follow the signs to the Well -- it's about 1km from Eyam Church.
