The history of the Tbilisi funicular dates back to March 1905 when it was opened as a connection between the city centre and the Mtatsminda hill plateau. The 500 metres long line was completely reconstructed between 2000 and 2012, followed by the reopening with new vehicles, tracks and station buildings.

The lower station can be found on Chonquadze street about 1,2 km west of Freedom Square. The upper station is on top of the 730 m high Mtatsminda hill, where panoramic views of Tbilisi can be enjoyed and a large amusement park can be visited.

The funicular also has a middle station, which is close to the St. David's Church and Pantheon.

In 2014 a single ride cost 2 Lari, but the fare has to be uploaded to a rechargable card, which costs another 2 Lari and is also vaild in the amusement park.

Haha - the full story is available on VT...but only for a few more hours! :-(
It will make its way onto here in the coming weeks and months! :-)
We were stuck up high (near the number 2 on a clock) and, after shouting for a while, we managed to attract the attention of a workman below. He went to find a staff member and, after a few failed attempts, he finally got the wheel turning again! :-)
