don't let the bombs put you off. If you do that these idiots win, and besides, these guys weren't exactly professional ;-)
If you want a really good experience of the city, bring your walking shoes:
catch the tube from zone 4 into Westminster. Thats where Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and Downing Street are. From there you can walk straight across the Thames onto the South Bank. Head N/E along the bank and you'll come to the London Eye, the Tate Modern Museum and the Borough Markets (only on Fri and Sat I think, google it but well worth a look). From the Tate Modern you can cross the Thames again and come to St Pauls Cathedral.
From here, you probably want to catch a bus West again as far as Trafalgar square then walk through the west end to Soho and Leicester Square then north up to Oxford street. Shop shop shop west along Oxford until you eventually get to Hyde Park.
Find a shady spot and fall over from exhaustion because all up that's about 8 miles but covers most of the main sights.
Oh, and if you're here on a Saturday have a look at the Notting Hill Markets. Make sure you get to the underpass area furthest away from Notting hill, thats where the best clothing is
As for nightlife... Soho's where its at for funky little bars and clubs but bring an open mind. The west end has some really nice upper market places where as Notting Hill has awesome vibrant pubs. Top nightclubs are Turnmills, Pacha, Ministry of Sound etc. If you're in Zone 4 east or north I can't help you much I'm afraid :(
