Incredible Service and Luxury! Top Quality All-Inclusive! Aims to please all your desires! Nov 05, 2008
This is a looooong review, but hopefully you will find it informative and helpful :)

ABOUT THE RESORT: Excellence Riviera Cancun (formerly known as Secrets Excellence) is a luxury all-inclusive adults-only resort located 30 miles from the Cancun Airport on Mexico's Riviera Maya. Some of the amenities included are 6 swimming pools, 5 jacuzzis, 8 restaurants, 10 bars, 24-hour room service, pool and beach waiter service, non-motorized water sports, activities and entertainment.

THE ARRIVAL: As soon as we stepped foot at the entrance to Excellence Riviera Cancun, a resort employee hurried over to us with warm, wet towels rolled up on a silver tray and handed us each one using silver tongs. Then two huge double doors automatically swung open in grand fashion and as we entered in the lobby, another employee greeted us with glasses of champagne! What a great way to begin our stay at the Excellence Riviera Cancun.

CHECKING IN: This place is s-t-u-n-n-i-n-g! Everywhere you look in the lobby there is marble and granite, huge bouquets of exotic flowers and sweeping ceilings. The front desk employees were so friendly and they reiterated more than once that it was their pleasure to have us stay with them and how pleased they were to serve us. We really felt like VIP's from the get-go. Since our room wasn't ready right away, they gave us one of those restaurant style beepers (that buzzes and blinks when they call you) so we were free to wander the resort and then we would know exactly when our room was ready. Well, someone brought us margaritas and we were barely getting started when the buzzer went off and we were able to go to our room. The bellhop loaded our luggage onto a cart and began to lead us to our room. Along the way he explained everything about the resort from bars to pools, restaurants to activities...he was very informative.

THE ROOM: This was the best hotel room we have ever stayed it. It is an open concept setup where the bathroom vanity, over-sized spa tub, bed area and sitting area are all combined. There is a toilet "closet" and a huge, maybe travertine, walk-in shower with a seat and an area to hang a robe and towels. The impression is that a lot of time was spent designing this room and adding luxurious details, like high ceilings, faux finishes, art, etc....they really didn't skimp on any aspect. We splurged and opted for the "swim-up suite". These suites are always bottom floor and your slider opens onto a patio which leads to a little grassy area and then the pool passes right by your room (maybe 20-25 feet out). There is another over-sized spa tub outside on the patio, plus a hammock and two lounge chairs on the grass. Each grassy area is separated from the neighbors by shrubs and plants so it feels private. We were in building or "Spa" 5 (room #5003). We really liked it because it was far from the main pool, tucked away in the back of the resort behind the actual Spa building. We enjoyed going down to the beach for the morning and then coming back to our room and lounging outside near the pool or in our spa. Even though it is quiet and private, there is a little bar and the waiter would periodically come by and serve us. We could also hear the calming music from the Spa building which was very nice. The pool by our room actually makes a huge circle passing by each building and connecting to a larger pool (not the main louder pool) There are 6 pools so it sounds confusing, lol! The maid serviced our room every morning and then returned around 7pm for turn-down service. At this time she would leave the printout of activities and entertainment for the next day as well as the weather forecast and candies! The room has everything you might need on hand from a hairdryer, iron and board, robes, slippers, even an umbrella. The minibar is stocked with water, soft drinks and beer, plus a few snacks and it is replenished everyday.

SERVICE AND SPECIAL TOUCHES: Every employee on the resort is in a crisp clean uniform and whether it's a waiter, a maid, or even a landscaper, every single employee looks you in the eye, smiles and greets you when you pass by. One night I couldn't find the ice maker so I happened to see a maid busy cleaning a room and I asked her where it was...she dropped what she was doing, took the ice bucket and left to fill it, returning it to me at my door. They really go above and beyond for you. The biggest example of this is my favorite story...

The first night at the resort, we went out for dinner and the, hung out watching the entertainment at the theater. When we finally returned to our room we found an "Anniversary" banner across our door and entered our room to find a hot bubble bath, burning incense, rose petals everywhere, kissing towel swans on the bed and champagne on ice! Neither of us requested this!

Then two nights later we again went out for dinner and entertainment and when we returned to our room we opened our door to find balloons and streamers everywhere, another bubble bath, a beautiful cake and champagne for my birthday (which was over a week before our vacation)! I turned to my husband and asked if he was behind this...he sheepishly replied "I wish I was, but honestly I didn't say a word". The hotel planned this on their own! Then I thought back and remembered that when checking in, the lady at the front desk asked if we were celebrating anything special. We explained that it was kind of a late dual celebration for our Anniversary and my milestone birthday. They didn't ask any more questions, but obviously were very careful to make a note and set up these two special celebratory nights for us! I've heard of hotels setting up rooms for special occasions, but it's usually lots of extra cha-ching. It was such a nice surprise, we were really blown away!

THE POOLS AND BEACH: There are 6 swimming pools in all. The main pool is the most crowded and included the swim-up bar and a volleyball net. The other pools are situated all over the resort and tend to be more private and quiet. The beach is beautiful. During our stay there were plenty of tiki huts available. The sand is so white and powdery. The resort rakes the seaweed every day and any trash is always promptly removed. One of our only complaints would be the beach lounge chairs. They were bulky and almost all of them had something wrong with them. We witnessed workers throwing stacks of them over the resort wall onto the beach one morning. No wonder why they're in bad shape. One day I tried three different chairs and they were all cracked or sagging so much that it was uncomfortable. But when I mentioned it to a worker he quickly brought me a new one which was fine. The water is very pretty. It's not as crystal clear bright turquoise as some beaches that I've seen in Aruba or from what I hear that Cancun has, but it is still beautiful. There is a little seaweed and coral rocks, but it's still a hundred times better than the Atlantic in the northeast US! FYI (because some people like to know what to expect) there is an occasional topless sunbather. Most days we didn't see or notice anyone, but one day there were like five or so...not that I'm looking, lol! But sometimes you just can't help noticing when your walking back to your tiki.

THE RESTAURANTS: There are 8 restaurants. BARCELONA is a Mediterranean restaurant that has a great breakfast and lunch buffet. Our dinner here was excellent. TOSCANA is an Italian restaurant serving only dinner and, honestly, we weren't very fond of it. The gnocchi were dry and crumbly. OREGANO PIZZA & PASTA is a casual restaurant serving a la carte lunch and dinner. The food here was very good. AGAVE is a traditional Mexican restaurant serving dinner which was good. CHEZ ISABELLE is a French Restaurant and wine cellar serving dinner which was excellent! SPICE is a Japanese and Asian restaurant which was my favorite place! You can opt for the Hibachi grill where you enter a private room with one or two other couples and the chef cooks in front of you. It's very entertaining and delicious! THE GRILL is a steakhouse serving lunch and dinner. This was my favorite place for lunch and the dinner was very good as well. THE LOBSTER HOUSE is of course a lobster and seafood restaurant. It also has a continental breakfast which wasn't great. Both mornings we ate here the server was slightly abrupt and they never had decaf coffee! The breakfast buffet was much better. We didn't eat dinner here because neither of us does lobster.

ENTERTAINMENT: Throughout the day the resort organizes many games and activities like beach volleyball, beach soccer, Texas Hold'em, crafts, dance lessons, archery, exercises and a lot more. There is an amazing Theater area with a great bar and tons of lounge chairs set up. This is the main place for evening entertainment. They have various acts including traditional dance shows, Caribbean bands, fire shows, magic shows, contemporary dance shows and more on different nights. At Alegria bar they have karaoke, dance nights, dance lessons, and more on different nights. We enjoyed all of the entertainment at the resort.

In closing ;) we thoroughly enjoyed the heck out of this resort! It was the best service we have experienced so far in all of our travels. The resort is simply amazing with all of it's lavish details, many amenities and sprawling grounds. Every part of the resort is meticulously cared for. We noticed constant, yet unobtrusive upkeep including windows being washed, paint and stain being touched up, landscaping be done, etc. We highly recommend the Excellence Riviera Cancun to any couples visiting the Cancun/Mayan Riviera area.
