Off the Beaten Path Recommendations & Tips Dec 15, 2008
DO & SEE
*Ride the subway - every time you see something different!
*Museums – many are “suggested contribution” all the time or on certain days. I would highly recommend the Met and the Moma. (http://www.ny.com/museums/free.html)
*View from the top of the Metropolitan Museum of art. (find your way to the rooftop)
*Ellis Island Ferry – free with good views of miss liberty
*Walk around! Central Park, Little Italy, Greenwich, Chelsea – they’re all great!
*Cathedral of St. John Divine – largest in the world & free (near N. Central Park)
*Shakespeare and Co. Bookstore - new & vintage books tucked into a little store right on Broadway (Chelsea: Broadway & Washington Square)
*Walk the Brooklyn Bridge at night! Or in the day! Anytime! It’s a great view.
*White Horse Tavern – where poet Dylan Thomas lived above and drank himself to death here with 18 shots of whiskey (Chelsea: W 11th & Hudson)
*The Knitting Factory – look online to see if any good bands are playing. I didn’t get to go but several friends recommended it. (74 Leonard St. between Church and Broadway)

EAT & PUBS
*Peanut Butter & Co. – unique PBJs and sweets (Chelsea: 240 Sullivan, 1 block south of Washington square)
*King Cole Bar – where the Bloody Mary was invented. It’s definitely in a beautiful 5 star hotel so we looked out of place, but hey, who cares. (In the St. Regis Hotel, Fifth Ave and 55th St. – enter the hotel and turn left, go through the restaurant and it’s all the way in the back)
*Hog Pit – a great dive bar with great people and music and pool! Apparently Harrison Ford, Willie Nelson, and Keanu Reeves have all been here too. (Chelsea: 22 9th Ave at 13th St.) (www.hogpit.com)
*Spice Thai restaurant (www.spicethainyc.com) (Chelsea: 199 8th Ave)
*Restaurant nextdoor to Spice – amazing, cheap, lots of food – when we couldn’t get into Spice we went here instead, our big group of 16 foreigners in this little extravagantly gay restaurant and had our best meal in nyc! Unfortunately I cannot find them online. (Chelsea: 197? 8th Ave)
*Peculiar Pub – if you’re a fan of Goats online comic, this is a must see. If you’re not, it’s a must anyways because it’s got the best atmosphere and cheapest drinks we found, along with an extensive international beer menu! (Chelsea: 145 Bleecker St.)

TIPS
*Eating at street carts is the cheapest! Most of the falafel ones are GOOD, too.
*Get the 7 day Metro pass for $24 instead of adding $ as you go - you'll save a LOT of money (we didn't and I wish we had!)

STAY
*Jazz on the Lenox Hostel – the cheapest you will find in NYC! Despite differing reviews, it’s a normal European Hostel: close to the subway, clean, friendly, not too loud, hot showers, and heaters. It is in Harlem, which no longer holds the dangerous reputation it used to have. I travelled with a friend, but had I been alone as a woman I would not have felt completely safe walking there. (Harlem: 104 W 128th St.)

Fisrt time I went to New York, did all the usual tourist stuff, some you can still do now (just) Statue of Liberty: not as big as you imagine, but still awesome, Empire Sate Building: a kinda run down office block - but still definetly worth doing (Ross!) and some stuff you can no longer do, World Trade Centre was huge and amazing, and the tour of the Stock Exchange, surprisingly cool. Sayed at Hotel Metro (midtown) only 3 star but great hotel.
Central Park rocks, Clubbing is great, friendly atmosphere and no beef!! Apart from having my braces pointed at all night (Ugly Betty was just starting out there).
Second time I stayed at Crowne Plaza, got a really rubbish room, but after complaining about having a ghost (the bathroom door locked itself and the toilet flushed, when security came up, it was locked using the old lock!) they moved us to a corner suite, overlooking 5th avenue and Cenrtal Park. Hotel is too full of tourists just looking around, I would recommend marriott at Times Square.
The third time I did New York, I was dragged round shops all day every day, the shops are cool, but not really any better than London.
Its kinda like London but safer, cleaner and less chavs! Will deffo be going back again and again, wanna do the ice hockey game I missed last time (got ill from clubbing all night then shopping all day)!!!

Then everything went down here very quickly and you can still see it, although the city did recover a bit. Everything looked run down and sad except the casinos of course. An interesting fact is, that the streets in the American version of Monopoly are named… New York - article from July 2006 (copy-pasted from old blog)

Everything is allowed and everything is possible, especially when you are an exotic foreigner who came from another part of the world. During my one-month stay in New York, all I can say is that thirty days are not enough to discover what this… Where Everything is Possible - New York, NY

We're staying on 42nd street and its only a quick walk to just about everything.  We walked down 5th Avenue but there was a parade - maybe something to do with Columbus Day which was the next day.  Looking for Rockefeller Centre, Dim saved me from asking for directions from the security guard.  The guard wearing the Rockefeller… Start spreading the news....

Everything was bold and brash; sometimes garish, but it sure looked good. The taxi honks were deep and resonant; the skyscrapers towering; the neon bright, and everything larger than life; even the free toothpaste in our hotel came out in huge super-sized dollops. The only… New York, USA - Sightseeing in the Snow!

As I said, it was one of those busy days at work, where everyone wanted everything at the same time, and of course, immediately and you barely have enough time to even take a breath. Well 5:00 came, and of course (Murphy's law), my boss needed something done that evening before I left, ughhh, sigh. Needless to say, I did not get out of there… Dinner, Empire State Building and Beers
