Europe: Sleeper Train: Chisinau to Kiev
Another sleeper train service I did in Moldova, this time going from Chisinau (Kishineu) going to the Ukraine capital of Kiev (Kyiv). Now a bit of handy advice here, most services go into Transdneister region of Moldova. These acts like a separate state and the unofficial control points ask for money and brides. If you speak English, or are western European looking, then expect to get charged up to $250. This is for all routes through the region. If you want to get from Chisinau to either Kiev or Moscow then take the lesser known longer route via the west side of the country (the route and timetable is below). Then you will not go through the Transdneister region and avoid all the delays, hassle and save your some money as well. The train journey and the bed cost around €39 one way. That was cheap when the airfare between the two cities is around €100. Chisinau Train Station: The platforms are typical Soviet, but the station building has been rebuilt, and I was really surprised. This is probably one of the best buildings in the city as it has money spent on it. Marble floors inside, with gold coated paint everywhere. Spacious. Well signposted. Couldn’t find the toilet mind you. Huge waiting rooms. No room for left luggage mind you. Also there is an international ticket room as well, but the lady only speaks Romanian or Russian. Kiev Train Station: Another huge Soviet-looking station with loads of platforms. When I arrived all the platforms were full of trains! The main station building inside is decorated with brown wooden palls, but with a huge crystal chandelier hanging down from the ceiling. I didn’t really check out the place, but there is a metro station next door to take passengers onwards into the city centre. Just be careful with the drunks hanging around outside the station.
