Stunning Oct 12, 2011
Listed on the world heritage list by UNESCO, the basilica in Porec is one of the key highlights of Istria. It has been around since the sixth century and its key feature has to be the wonderful Byzantine mosaics which adorn the main altar. It is rather strange to see Christ without a beard, and as expected, Mary and the twelve apostles are all there. St. Euphrasius is also depicted. Though the ones in Ravenna, Italy, are way more stunning in my opinion, I thought the mosaics were rather wonderful here and definitely worth seeing. The rest of the basilica is an empty shell though. Apart from the basilica, the baptistery was rather sweet, containing a small patch of art which offers a small glimpse at how decorated the building must have been in its prime. The wooden roof was striking too. Beyond the baptistery, climbing the stairs to the top of the tower is well worth it for the views. The museum which is tacked on contains nice mosaic examples too, which is worth a quick glimpse even if the descriptions are rather limited. Worth a day trip to Porec if you are in Istria.
