Best Dumplings in New York! Aug 27, 2008
For $3.50 a weary traveler with a big belly can fill up on 5 delicious homemade dumplings at Eton in Brooklyn. While Manhattan's chinatown beckons with its' 5-for-1 their small size and watery sub-par fillings hardly make a meal. A quick train ride to one of Brooklyn's oldest italian neighborhoods offers quite the culinary discovery: the best dumplings in new york.
Eton is SMALL with only 10 chairs. But for those willing to wait a few minutes, and fork over less than four bucks, hearty fresh and unique dumplings await. Like the space - the menu is simple. There are only three kinds of dumplings: pork-beef, chicken and mushroom, and vegetables. For 6 bucks you get 2 of every dumpling plus 2 of that week's special dumpling (shrimp, etc.). All of the dumplings are plump, filled with fresh ingredients right in front of you, and the wrappers are handmade in house. Other nice touches: about 5 house made sauces which you can take in unlimited amounts (ginger soy, plum sauce, etc.), Hawaiian shave ice, and hand pulled soups in the winter.
While Eton is off the beaten path for many travelers coming through the city it is a perfect stop to whet your appetite on an outer borough adventure or food crawl. plus right down the block is a beautiful view of lower manhattan, state of liberty and the east river.
Extra points for owner and husband/wife team Krista and Eton for being so nice and chatty.
