Estero Overview

Estero is a village in Lee County which is part of the Cape Coral-Fort Myers Metropolitan Statistical Area. The heart of Estero is the spring-fed Estero River, which flows to Estero Bay.

Estero's history is a little different than that of most small villages. It was established by the followers of Cyrus Teed who, in addition to claiming to be immortal, decided that we live on the inside of the Earth's outer Skin and that all the celestial bodies are contained inside the hollow Earth. He called this theory Koreshan Unity. His followers incorporated the town in 1904 as Estero. When Dr. Teed died in 1908, it was a critical blow to the group's faith, and the membership dwindled. The Koreshan's original site is now owned by Florida state park system.
