Detour on the way to Chichen-Itza
posted by:

Everyone warned us to take the highway and not the toll road to Chichen-Itza.  Well, of course.  We'd heard the toll roads were really expensive.  Well, the difference between the toll road and the highway wasn't so clear on the signs and we did end up on the toll road.  We hit the first close to an hour later... for $19.  Ok, that's definitely an expensive toll road.  Luckily, there was finally an exit and we made our way back to the regular highway.  But f…

We finished the two holes in 112 early in the morning.  Around 7:20am, Scott took me to show me where we would be opening up our new holes.  The site is further down the main road and back into the thicket.  Op23 is a small platform group with two small structures.  It was test pitted about four years ago but nothing much was found.  Scott wants us to put four new holes in the ground.  Once I got back to the other site they had finished and we packed up and walke…

Stopped over at the famous Ruins Site halfway between Playa Del Carmen and the State Capital, Merida. World Famous, El Castillo. Amazing ruins site, best seen with a guide for at least the first few hours, then go wondering by yourself.  Best early in the morning or late afternoon to get those elusive photos without people in them. Temple of the Warriors.

we heard about the crowds at chitchen itza... but nothing could prepare us for what was about to happen. we arrived late in the afternoon, and went through the usual routine of locating some accomodation, closely followed by finding something to eat. we enjoyed a quiet night (more cards), and rose early to to beat the crowds to chitchen itza. first impressions were quite good.... not anyone else in the place. we opted for a tour, which turned to not be much chop (not good). but regardless …

Woke up early and walked around Isla for a bit.  Came back and packed my bag and toured around the beach on the north end of the island.  This a very nice beach.  Went back and packed up my bag and headed to the ferry dock.  Just missed the ferry, so we had to wait another half hour.  Got a collectivo back to ADO and then grabbed a bus going down to the Hotel Zone.  I was sort of turned around and the damn bus driver picked us up at the very end of his route and …

Cenotes

Beau and I went to the small city of Valladolid to see the cenotes and the ruins of Ek Balam.  Sadly, no one wanted to take us the 20 miles to Ek Balam for less than $20, so we decided to scrap that plan.  Cenotes, however were much closer.   And quite cool.  We started in the late afternoon at the one in the city.  It was open on one side and had some europeans swimming in it (easily classified as such b/c of the speedo and willingness to get…

Chichen Itza tour (www.tours-cancun.com) The tour left early in the morning but pastries and drinks were served on the Bus. All I wanted to do was sleep since I was up late but the tour guide did his Job and talked the whole time.  We stopped in valladolid and were told not to give the children money at any of the locations because then they will just want to chase tourists rather than go to school which I think was reasonable. Shopping So they told us that these …

On our first day we went for a visit to Chichen Itza, and than move to Merida. Before we reached Chichen Itza we made a stop in Valladolid. Valladolid (Yucatan) is an old Mexican town dating from 1545. It has an impressive cathedral on the market square. Also it has an monastery, but we had no time to visit that. On the market square there are young students who are very interested in tourists. Mostly they want to test there English. So don't be surprised that they approach to you to ask som…
