Playa del Carmen is a great place to spent your holliday. It has beautiful beaches, many restaurants en shops and friendly people. It is a very save place and all the services are great.   Playa del Carmen has fantastic Hotels. We stayed in Iberostar Tucan / Quetzal (see my review). There is a very nice Tequilla store with different sorts of Tequilla in beautiful bottles. There also are nice shops with clothes and shoes. Playa del Carmen is situated very central in Yucatan. I Arrive in Cancun - And the trip really begins!!

The ferry arrived back at the Cancun terminal, and I got a taxi back to Erik and Manolo's place.  Manolo and I spent a bit comparing stories of our wonderful weekends; him with his family for his birthday, me on the island.  It was fantastic to see him again and spend more time talking to him. Erik then arrived home as well, and we headed off to dinner.  It was walking distance from their house, so it was a fantastic chance to see a little more of their neighborhood on a beaut...

We all set off on our boat expedition to isla mujeres (isle of women) for a perfect day of sailing, snorkelling, shopping,  exploring and only because it's mexico..... open bar drinking! The morning started early as we set off with 40 others on a catameran over to the small isle opposite the city of  cancun. The water once again was crystal clear and just craving for some attention! Our skipper Rafael, a very fun yet humble guy, made sure we were all settled in for a great time. Wit...

What are Topes?

I flew into Cancun and I had no idea where I wanted to go or stay.  I had intentionally avoided booking anything more than a flight because I knew I wanted to see ruins and I wasn’t sure where the best “base of operations” would be.  I rented my car and drove into Cancun and over to the hotel strip around the lagoon.  I was hungry and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to eat, but after making one loop around the lagoon, I decided to just go with a known quantity.  TGI Fr...

The breeze didn't seem to have died any over night, but we were ready to get in the water and make the most of it.  This morning I had enchiladas de mole for breakfast.  Yum.  Plus refried black beans and rice!  That's what I'm talking about!Today we would dive with Kendal and Tom, who we had met yesterday, as well as some other divers from Monterrey.  We got started more or less on time and headed for the reef.  Now, I want to make something clear.  Don't g...

Took the GRE at 9am on the 8th, ate dinner with Trevor in Portland and then flew to San Francisco to see Tom.  Checked out his new pad and then later met up with Todd and his girlfriend.  Went to a couple of lame Berkeley/Stanford recruitment parties.  They did have free booze though.  Went to a farmers market and the beach with Tom and Laz before heading back to SFO on Sunday.  Made it back to PDX about 10pm and shuttled to the hotel.  My Alaskan flight was dela...

Mayan ruins on the Carribean

Although I thought the actual ruins at Chichen-Itza were much more impressive than those at Tulum, I have to say that the setting at Tulum was absolutely phenomenal.  The site, as a whole, is fairly large, but the ruins, themselves, aren't so large.  Lizards hanging out on the ruins or in the grass were very picture friendly.  The whole park was set up a lot better than Chichen-Itza as well.  There were no vendors inside the wall of Tulum and we got a map of the site ...

First of all, as a little background, this is my third trip into the great vacation country of Mexico.  In the past I have traveled to Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta with my family.  There have been many times in my adulthood that I have thought of venturing back and traveling into the Yucatan, although this time, it felt like the right time.   Playa Del Carmen, or as the natives call it “Playa,” is very different from the other Mexico travel destination.  The others, ...

A short sprint and snorkel
posted by:
Dec 13, 2006
The downside to cruises is the limited amount of time for shore excursions.  A 45 minute ferry ride from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen, a bumpy 10 min. cab ride to the park, and we had already wasted more than an hour of our shore time between getting off the boat and arriving at the park.  Unlucky bastards that we are, we had to set up our own transportation to this wonderful park, as this excursion was fully booked.  Roughly $80 for entrance, snorkel gear, ...

So it was the big day for the wedding and the weather was nice.  Everyone was taking it relatively easy during the day so as not to be too, um, over zealous, at the ceremony.  People were dressing up, nice light colored, cool shirts, and light slacks.  Guayaberas and linen were the order of the day, though not mandatory.  The boys in the wedding party were sporting some nice digs.  I was happy to be a part of the party as an usher along with one of Liz's cousins. ...

Talk about relaxing! Playa del Carmen was such a grrrreat {last minute} choice! It's such a nice difference from built-up Cancun. Playa had lots of smaller hotels right on the beach, with plenty do to do and lots of great restuarants within walking distance!
