Arrived in Oaxaca with Britt (trav friend from Portland - Oregan) on Wednesday night. This is a beautiful city and is very different to the hustle and bustle of Mexico City, with it`s colonial buildings and cobbled streets. The buildings are painted with azure blues, yellows and terracotas and every door you pass you seem to find another courtyard space with a fountain and creeping flora and forna rising up to the 1st floor balconies, which eventually make way to the open roof to the courtyar...

we arrived into Oaxaca after a 12 hour bus ride across mexico. we were stopped about 4 times and we had our bags searched by armed army- little bit nerve wrecking! Foley had bought Cuban Cigars in Cancun so was a bit scared that they would take them off him or that he would be in trouble but all was good. arrived at 6am to Oaxaca. our tour to monte blanc was at 10am so we had a little rest for the morning. we paid extra to have a tour of the city too which was worth it cause we saw some prett...

Teachers Strike

We arrived in Oaxaca to hear that the Teachers union had been blockaiding the main square for the last 3 weeks and the night before the police had tried to clear the square and there are reports of 3 people being killed.  Here's more info if your concerned http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N14295573.htm.  (thanks for the tip Fede).Being told by an older tourist that we should stay away, we headed down to the Zolaco (main square) anyway.  There was a palatable sense of te...

Arrival in Puerto Escondido
posted by:
Aug 28, 2007 - Jun 19, 2008
We arrived in the morning after quite a comfortable bus ride. After some haggling with the taxi drivers I managed to reduce what they initially tried to tell me would be a 3 hour trip acoss town to an agreed 30 to 40 pesos which then became 20 pesos and a 5 min trip once I got hold of the charge sheet in the taxi. We're staying with a very friendly family but are hitting a serious language barrier which is frustrating since it is so difficult to communicate.

What Not to Miss in Oaxaca

Oaxaca is a beautiful state - tied with two other states as the most mountaineous in Mexico.  The city itself if surrounded by mountains and is at an altitude of 5,000 feet above sea level.  If visiting Oaxaca, I would definetely go into the mountains - even ride the dirt roads if you want a full experience. Visit the market!  There are very interesting and cheap things to buy.  Make sure you buy the black pottery (never in short supply there) - this pottery is made right...

This was a two week learning experience. I got to learn some cooking and enjoy how Mexico celebrates their Day of the Dead. It lasts about a week and they're starting to recognize American Halloween but it doesn't come close to how Mexico celebrates. It's lively, it's wonderful, the family grave site visits with lots of candles, flowers food and music is simply an incredible experience and like no other. I will be back Mexico. I will be back.

Oaxaca was my favorite place in all of Mexico.  Looking back I'm not really sure why necessarily, but I had the most fun here.  For one, the hostel we stayed at was great.  The staff was helpful and friendly, and we ended up meeting a few new travel partners as well.  This town, like many others, had a central park/plaza area.  Every day we would relax around the plaza, and drink delicious coffee from one of the numerous cafes.  There were also little shops set u...
