Nayarit is a wonderful state that is spared the large crowds of Mazatlan to the North and Puerto Vallarta to the South.
You can birdwatch while paddling through the mangroves from San Blas, enjoy the beach at Rincon de Guayabitos, chill by the lake in the crater of the (extinct) volcano at Laguna de Santa Maria del Oro, go up into the mountains to see indian villages, buy artesania and watch free folkoric shows in Tepic and Santiago Ixquintla, take a boat out to the weird round island town of Mexcaltitan, and much more.

Wow, this was a great experience! After going thru a difficult time personally, I decided to get out and learn something new. I've always wanted to surf as good as my ex, or at least be able to jump in the water with him when we were dating, but found surfing to be the most difficult sport I've tried to learn. It doesn't help when I'm learning in Huntington Beach, which isn't called Surf City for nothing. There are mostly guys who have been surfing forever, very intimating, very rude.

Sayulita is such a unique vacation experience. I went with three of my best friends and we had a blast! Its a small mexican town popular for its surf! My friends and I learned how to surf during the day and salsa at night. We stayed there only for a week and still knew many familiar faces and made friends with the locals! My favorite place there was a bar called Calakmul where they played live reggae music on the weekends. This place is definitely worth a visit!!
