Estadio Municipal Merida Reviews
Jun 28, 2007
We couldn't believe our luck when we arrived at the stadium for the opening game of the 2007 Copa America football tournament.....
the ticket touts were out in force and we expected to have to pay at least 300 % of the cover price for a ticket...it's opening night after all!
However, the first bloke who approached us sold us two tickets for a total of 20,000 Bolivars...only US$5!!!
The match was great to watch, the crowd great to be a part of.
Peru ran out three nil winners against the lacklustre Uruguay...and they had a perfectly legitimate goal disallowed.
The stadium is brand new for the tounament - 40,000 seats - but won't be copied anywhere else as it was obviously designed by someone who had no intention of attending the matches...the upper tiers are serviced by entry/exit tunnels which put you out on the first row...daft as Venezuelans aren't keen on...sitting still for such an excessive amount of time as 45 minutes;...arriving on time;...taking their seats quickly; or ... being aware of the fact that they're standing in front of you!
Also there is one entrance to the stadium complex...think 40,000 people walking to the stadium on one road which has been narrowed by approximately 40,000 ticket touts, food vendors, shirt sellers and, get this, articulated trucks full of drinking water.
