Essaouira, formerly known as "Mogador" is a popular sea-side medina (walled) town, located about a 2.5 hours drive west of Marrakech on the Atlantic coast. The city's walls have been kept in very good condition and the whitewashed building walls and blue shutters are very photogenic. There are supposedly no motor vehicles of any kind allowed within the medina, but the odd scooter still sneaks in.
The long, sandy beach and consistent winds make it a popular place for holiday makers and wind/ kite surfers; particularly during the summer months. Given its regular flow of tourists (both foreign and Moroccan), there is lots of choice for hotels, guesthouses and restaurants. One can find fine items crafted from wood here.
Prices here are generally cheaper than in Marrakech. The medina and souqs are more open, cleaner and a bit less chaotic than Marrakech as well. Essaouira can be enjoyed as a day trip or a quiet holiday destination.
