Erzurum Overview

Erzurum is located at an altitude of 1900 m on a high plateau at the foot of the Palendöken Mountain (3271 m). The area hosted the 2011 Winter Universiade and is home to Turkey's longest ski trail. With a population of more than 360.000 people, Erzurum is the biggest town in Eastern Anatolia.

The main sight in the city centre is the Yakutiye Madrasa, which was built in the early 14th century during the Ilkhanate period. Its main facade consists of a richly engraved portal standing between a turquoise shimmering minaret and a half minaret. The building has a covered courtyard and a Kümbet, which is a cylindrical mausoleum.

Other sights include the Byzantine style Erzurum Citadel, the Double Minaret Madrasa and the three cupola tombs from the 12th and 14th century.
