Finally met its demise... Aug 01, 2014
This is an update to an earlier review I did on the Ermione Hotel in Erice, Sicily, from 2005. I had a chance to re-visit this hotel in 2014 and found it closed and abandoned. It’s not really surprising as it had been in some state of neglect ever since I first visited here in 1995. This was a rather sobering experience seeing the hotel again after nearly a decade with the ravages of nature trying to reclaim its dominion over the place. It was actually a bit of a creepy experience as there wasn’t a soul about, only some animals scurrying around, birds roosting in the overgrowth and otherwise just dead silence, save the occasional whoosh of a cable car going by. The views are still there from the rear of the hotel and spectacular as ever. They remain it’s only saving grace.

As part of the School of International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy (ISAMS), I had stayed at this hotel in the past, and also had many meals with participants of the ISAMS school over the years. The food here was always pretty good, but the hotel itself remained the same mostly as the years ticked by and aside from a painting or two on the exterior, there were never any upgrades or even advancements of upkeep going on here. It’s perhaps not surprising that it eventually closed its doors as an establishment can only get away with some degree of neglect for a finite number of years until people stop coming and start avoiding the place. Still, it’s a shame, since I mentioned in my previous review how splendid the views are here.

I don’t know exactly when the hotel closed, but sometime around 2010 I think. It certainly had the look of something abandoned for years. The new cable car, which was still under construction in 2005, has been completed and runs right next to the route down the mountain. There was once a cable car in the same place years ago, but dismantled in the 1980’s I think and rebuilt in 2005. This should have meant better business for the hotel, but the owners/proprietors obviously did not take advantage of the opportunity to revive and/or upgrade this hotel. It languishes now, alone on the hillside, while people pass to and fro up and down the mountain, passing over the hotel grounds. Just a spectacle for people to ponder, “I wonder what that was?”.

Great views, but sadly rundown Jun 06, 2005
Having visited in Erice, Sicily many times, I had the misfortune to stay here once, but also to visit it many times. It was built in the 1960's and still looks like it. Not much ever seems to change here in the way of improvements and it is an establishment that could really be much better than it is with a little bit of effort. There is even a swimming pool in the back of the hotel that appears to have been abandoned for as long as I can remember going there. It mainly collects rainfall water that acts as a breeding ground for mosquitos, which come inside the hotel if windows are left open. This is particularly annoying at night when trying to sleep.

The only real appeal of this hotel are the wonderful views of the city of Trapani it affords. They are really quite spectacular with the city spreading out below in it's sickle shape and the Egadi Islands in the background. While the views may be spectacular, the location here is not exactly central and it's quite a steep and long walk up the center of Erice. There are many hotels in Erice that offer better accommodations with more charm than this place. The great views here are simply not worth the stay in this run down hotel. The only reason I even give it two stars is because of the views, but the establishment itself deserves only one star.

My recommendation is to avoid staying at this hotel, but do pay it a visit for the views. Erice is a wonderful and charming city on the top of a mountain and is an inviting place for tourism, but the Ermione Hotel is probably the worst establishment here, and the sad reality is that they don't seem to care either. A real pity, as it could be made into something quite nice and could become one of the best places to stay in Erice. Even the distance to the city center would not be a problem if they were to offer a more regular shuttle service (or shuttle on request). It's just another example of the failure of this hotel to accommodate its guests with amenities.

I guess I should mention that they built a cable car down to Trapani, which is a midway walk between this hotel and the center of Erice. It was in construction when I was last there in 2005, but is in full operation now. It's a positive I guess, but since it is located near the bus station too, and is a walk down from most other hotels, not an advantage really. I added some additional photos too that I found online - one of the Mosquito pool and one vintage shot. To me, I just wonder every time I see this place, how can it even exist in such condition?

Good review, Brian. You would think with its surrounding view, management would renovate and upgrade everything including the pool as a "first" priority to profit a little more because of its location. Thanks for sharing and thanks for the warning.

It's a real shame since the views are awesome. I bet this place was really something when it was first built in the 1960's. It was supposedly refurbished in the late 1990's, but it looked the same to me in 2005 as it did in 1995, except it used to have a 60's style multicolor facade, which is all white now. I've no idea what the story is with that disgusting, abandoned, mosquito breeding pool is? There's a picture of it on TripAdvisor from 2008. Oh, it's so gross! Maybe I should grab a copy of it and post it here...
