Despite its population of approximately 120.000 inhabitants, Erlangen seems to always stand in the shadow of its historically famous or infamous neighboring city Nuremberg, only about 20 Km south of Erlangen. Though not necessarily a pearl in terms of architecture and superlatives, Erlangen has its very own and unique flair. Home of one of Germany's most traditional universities and a center point of medical research in Germany, Erlangen has traditionally attracted a large number of international students and academics who have established an incredibly diverse and intellectually and culturally rich society. It is a pulsating town where multi-culti comes together with old Huguenot history and inovative spirits. One of Erlangen main attractions is the local Beer-Festival "Der Berg" which takes place early June in a fantastic location, a lush forest on a hill near downtown. It's tradition is even older than the Oktoberfest in Munich and absolutely worth a trip. It is far less commercial and the hospitality of the local people is fantastic. Erlangen is also a typical bicycle-town where bikes define the scene of the streets, creating a relaxed and quiet ambiance while strolling over the busy market held every day.
