Erg Chebbi is a Saharan Erg or "Sand Sea", made from wind-swept, rolling sand dunes approximately 25km's by 10km's in size. The ever-changing dunes reach an estimated height of 300m. The closest town to this popular spot is Merzouga, which is roughly a 9-10 hour drive from either Marrakech or Fes. It is very close to the Algerian border.
This is a very popular area for overnight camel and 4x4 treks. There are also many hotels and guesthouses in the immediate area that offer lodgings, food and excursions onto the dunes with guides. The erg is most visibly impressive around dawn and dusk when its colour can shift from golden to orange to pink within a short period of time.
