The Archeologic site of Ercolano is just under the Vesuvio, a few kilometers from Napoles. Herculaneum (also known as Ercolano) was destroyed by a river of volcanic mud after the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD. The town is not as famous as Pompeii, yet it is less than half an hour away and very well preserved. The mud helped to preserve the town & there are still a lot of roofs on the houses and many well preserved wall paintings.
It takes about a day to see the whole site in detail.
