A world heritage historic temple Nov 03, 2010
Hieizan Enryakuji is a very historic temple. When we learn Japanese history, this temple is indispensable. Enryakuji was founded by Saicho in 788. With the support of Emperor Kammu, Enryakuji had power. In 803 Saicho made voyage to the Tang dynasty to learn esoteric Buddhism and Zen. After returning to his homeland, he taught his knowledge to his disciples. Enryakuji became, so to speak, an university in those days. Many founders of new Buddhism had trained at Enryakuji. Priests of this temple had gradually militarized. Aristocracy or samurai government were threatened by its military power. So those in power attacked Enryakuji many times till the warring states period. Afterwards, Enryakuji was rebuilt. In 1994, Enryakuji was registered with world heritage. Hieizan Enryakuji is large temple. The whole mountain is its precincts. So you should spare half a day to visit there.
