English Gardens May 03, 2013
The English Gardens in Munich are one of the world’s largest public urban parks, bigger than either Central Park in New York or Hyde Park in London. They get their name from the style of landscaping; the British were at the forefront of a fashion for large parks made to look like natural landscapes, without formal beds and with little water features and lakes, and that’s the style the gardens were laid out in. This makes it a relaxed park with lots of wildlife and happy dogs and children running around. There are lakes and small waterfalls, lots of birds and squirrels, and meadows full of flowers in the spring.

The park has several water courses running through it, including the very fast flowing Eisbach. Artificial waves in the Eisbach give the park one of its most unusual attractions; river surfing. River surfing is technically illegal (and when someone loses their balance and you see how close their skull comes to the concrete bank, you can see why…) but that doesn’t seem to stop people, and it’s fascinating to watch. Just look for the crowds hanging off the bridge watching at the southern tip of the park.

Apart from river surfing, there are numerous little kiosks where you can buy beer and light snacks (a German light snack being loosely equivalent to most other nation’s small meal), and some proper restaurants. Beware of the crows, mind you - one of my favourite memories of the park is watching a woman's face as a crow stole her entire dinner and flew away with it. The gardens are very beautiful and a great place to go running, go for a walk, or lie around in the sunshine, depending on your personal approach to holidays.

Entrance is free, beer is affordable, and this is one of the loveliest places I’ve been.

Munich's Playground Jun 04, 2011
One of Munich's best kept secrets is the English Garden. It is named after an Englishmen who designed it and it actually larger than New York's Central Park. Many people, myself included, will actually skip on seeing the English Garden if it is their first time in Munich. However it is worth the trip. The Isar River flows through the garden. At its head is a man made wave where you will find surfers. During the summer the park becomes packed with people laying out in the sun and jumping in the Isar. The man made portion of the Isar is comparible to a lazy river at a theme park. People from all over, but mostly Germans, can be seen drinking, playing football, and relaxing in the park.

For the drinkers out there the English Gardens dont fall short to Munich's high drinking standards. Many beer gardens can be found throughout the park. The Hofbrahaus has a wonderful beer garden by the Chinesischer Turm located roughly in the center of the park. German music, local food, and of course beer can be found here.

The English Garden is a great place to go if you want to go relax and recover from last nights hangover or to start the day off right with a beer or ten. Bring a towel, sunscreen, and something to go swimming and you'll fit right in. Bonus points for bringing an American Football, they really draw attention.
