Encinitas Vacation Guide
Located in the Northern part of San Diego county, this beachside city is really a composition of several distinct communities into one incorporated city. Leucadia, the beach district of the city, is both high-brow and funky. With $10million homes dotting the crumbling beach cliff side, to dilapidated trailer parks less than a block inland, Leucadia is a harmonious anarchy. Two of the beaches sung about by the beach boys in 'Surfing USA' are located in the 5 mile stretch of coastline.
Further inland, the city looses it's charm, as large tract homes and acres of big box stores line the main thoroughfare of El Camino Real. SUVs and Mercedes Benz dominate the streets here, and cultural interest is hard to find.
In the southern part of the city, the old town Encinitas recovers some of the charm of the city. With the old single screen 'La Paloma Theater' showing art flix, and the vegetarian, spiritual and environmental stores mixed in with mexican food and artsy cafe's, the old town remembers the charm of the Pacific Coast Highway the runs through it's center.
Encinitas is home to many charming little businesses, such as tea shops, yoga studios, and many outstanding restaurants. Additionally, there is a large running and cycling community, and there are running, cycling, and triathlon shops all around the downtown area.
Come check out the Self Realization Temple's meditation gardens for a relaxing and calming experience.

Encinitas has the whole beach town vibe, right down to the sandy shores. Each beach has a different vibe though, and it's good to know what you're getting into before you're there.Moonlight: The most family friendly, Moonlight has the largest parking lot, showers, fire pits, and a snack stand…

I took a surf lesson today. It's true that I've lived in Southern California my entire life, and I have spent many hours floundering around in the ocean on a surfboard, attempting to stand up, but usually just ending up getting hit in the head with the surfboard....or face-planting into the sand in…

These pix were taken at the tidepools in Encinitas. Swami's Meditation Garden is directly behind me up on the cliff. The gardens, not pictured, are beautiful and offer a breathtaking view of the Pacific.
