Encampment Overview

Encampment is a small town of about 450 (unchanged since 2000) located along Wyoming Route 70 AKA The Battle Pass Scenic Byway) in Carbon County in Southern Wyoming near the border with Colorado. The town is in a beautiful setting and was established back around 1897 when copper was discovered in the area. Encampment (AKA Grand Encampment) quickly grew into a copper mining and smelting center and was named for the large encampment established by the mining companies. A 19 mile, steam powered, aerial tramway was built to get the ore from the mines to the smelters. At the time this was the largest aerial tramway in the world. Encampment is also home to the very nice Grand Encampment Museum.
