Hiking the Emerald Pools trail in Zion National Park during the off season certainly compels one to appreciate why Scenic Drive is closed to private vehicles during the summer. The trailhead is across the street from Zion Lodge, the only hotel within park grounds. You might well imagine how many parking spaces surround this sprawling complex, but we still had to cruise a bit and to find a spot. Let me add that we only headed for the lodge after a futile attempt to park at the trailhead, which was jammed well beyond capacity. On New Year’s Day!

But soon enough we were crossing the footbridge spanning the Virgin River and on the trail. This is actually a collection of trails which includes several loops. The weather was only slightly chilly, but much of the trail lies in the shade and there was a fair amount of snow and icy patches along the route. We passed by some lovely waterfalls and several pools. Apparently the cool, wet environment here is rare for the National Park’s desert setting, enabling algae to thrive and cast ‘emerald’ hues in these pools. Not so much with snow on the ground, but pretty nonetheless.

The stretch we tackled had some elevation gain, but the path was wide and maintained: easy going so long as there was no ice. We soon encountered a chain blocking the way and announcing the trails had been closed due to ice, so I cannot comment on whether the way becomes more difficult further on. I believe we made it as far as the Middle Emerald Pools, with the Upper Emerald Pools beyond. Quite a few folks had ignored the closure but we turned around.

If you visit Zion during the summer this should prove a great spot to hop off the shuttle and stretch your legs.
