Emerald Gecko Sep 19, 2011
I stayed in Emerald Gecko for a week and had a great time there, specially due to the travelers that me and my friends met there. We made some good friends and fun was a constant thanks to our efforts :) Our nights in Emerald were so good that travellers from other resorts usually came to join us!

We had free transfer from the jetty to the Emerald Gecko and since it was low season they made a discount in our acoomodation :)

About the accommodation, we stayed housed in the bamboo cabins. They are fan cooled with attached bathroom with freezing water :) and small balcony, that has a small table and two small chairs. The bed has a mosquito net, wich is very important due to the amount of mosquitos in that area. In the morning, sometimes, we didn’t have water or light, maybe due to the monsoon or they were just trying to save energy….

The Emerald Gecko has a restaurant that is a little bit expensive, the service is extremely slow, the staff is not too friendly and they have very strange schedules….But the food is good and when it’s raining a lot is a good option to have your meals there. Otherwise you just can go out of Emerald to find other places that are more cheaper and where the food is very tasty :) By the way this restaurant doesn’t have alcoholic drinks!

The beach in front of Emerald, beach no 5, is awesome, but have a lot of corals. If you walk a few meters to the right you’ll be able to swim without hurting your feet and without walking a couple of meters to find the perfect depth :)

The staff in general is not very friendly. Sometimes it seems that was better for them not to have anyone in the Emerald. I was there in the monsoon season, so a couple of unpleasant things happened :

- One palm tree fell on the way to the bamboo cabins, we informed the staff and their reply was “Pass over it!”

- The whole area was flooded and had immense water in front of beach huts. One of the travelers that we met there talked to staff about it and they said "If you're not happy, you can leave!"

There are a lot of dogs in the Island of Havelcock. One thing that I really disliked was the fact that the dogs were always fighting and sometimes you wouldn't be able to be lying down on the sand enjoying the sun. But this is a problem in the whole Island!!!! A problem in the Emerald was that the manager tried to electrify a dog!!!! It was a disgusting episode and we all felt very sorry for that. Fortunately the dog was Ok :)

Beside this or that unpleasant episode, the environment in the emerald gecko was really cool, we met great people there and had a great time :) They just need to change the whole staff! Ahahaha... :)

Nice cabins close to the sea Jan 26, 2011
While there are plenty of cheap beach huts in Havelock, I wanted something not-too-shabby as I wanted to have good memories of my visit to such a special place.

I opted for their cheapest option at INR1250 per night for their "Cabin" ... which are quite new. The cabin has a spacious bedroom with a good mosquito net and a fan. The bathroom and toilet is modern. There is also a small verandah. Everything was clean.

The other options looked mixed ... the two-storey "Lodges" look well kept but some of the other options (ie. "Huts" and "Cabins") looked a little run-down but perhaps from the outside only. The thatched roof had been replaced or supplemented with canvas advertising from China.

Cabins are set further back from the beach but it isn't far. The beach is clean and white, but during low tide it isn't possible to swim. The slope is very gentle and you'd have to walk forever through rocky bits to get waist-deep. During high tide, it could be nice like a swimming pool ... but the wind was strong during high tide when I was there and it stirred up the sand a little.

The restaurant serves delicious food at around INR200 per meal. There are other eating options nearby ... Andaman Bubbles has a cafe at similar pricing and next door to that is Rony's which is cheap and cheerful.

Confirmed bookings require a 50% deposit by bank transfer.

Without having checked out other options on Havelock, I'd absolutely recommend the Emerald Gecko and would love to return.
