Historical & wonderful .... Don't miss this jewel.... Dec 15, 2009
If you have an anniversary or a special day coming up this motel would be the perfect place to celebrate at. If you just wanted to stay at a really great place that is stunningly beautiful and wonderful, this is the perfect place for that too.
When we stayed it was still called the Multnomah Inn. The restored historic lobby was breathtaking (from the pictures it is unchanged) It looked like something out of a 1920's movie. There are elaborate pillars and chandeliers with a second story balcony that ran around the entire lobby.
We attended a wedding reception at the motel. We booked the room early to get one of the rooms they had set aside for guests. I loved the room. It was decorated in forest green with a couchette and table and chairs in the main room as you walked in. Beyond that was a darling bedroom with two queen beds. It was also decorated in the same forest green. The beds were really comfortable. We were so glad we stayed two nights.
The first night we asked if the concierge knew of any Greek restaurants. He told us about one down the street with a purple octopus in the front. We stood undecided: it sounded too touristy to us .... he asked if we wanted an authentic Greek restaurant: yes. He directed us out the left side of the building: down one block then turn right and go to the cafe in the middle of the block. We went and loved it... We had to go down stairs to the restaurant...and we had an absolutely wonderful meal... the cooks were singing and the waiters joined in... we were delighted... but I digress...
So back to the motel... In the morning we had a made to order breakfast... omelets, bacon, biscuits, gravy .... anything you could want. The dining room was quite uniquely painted... each area had a different theme... we thought it was great as many times only one room will be painted or decorated and the others seem like they are "side" rooms. A free paper was available in the lobby.
The next day we found we could easily reach the many venues as well as shopping using the public transportation and walking. Portland has an incredible number of stores and piazzas. We were lucky and found an Italian celebration in progress. They had opera singers and other entertainers. We really liked the different displays showing the different regions in Italy. We drifted around there for several hours enjoying our coffee and watching the entertainment. Our day was very entertaining. We were looking forward to the wedding and reception that night.
As we were getting ready that evening we found the room had a great little hard bound book that told the history of the Inn. An amazing number of people had stayed there, presidents, Elvis, Kennedys, foreign queens and kings and dignitaries. At the wedding reception the next night quite a few of us were talking about the amazing history of the Inn.
The wedding reception was absolutely flawless. They served portabella mushrooms with cheese as a main course. It was all perfectly presented and beautifully served.
When we go back to Portland we will definitely stay again. We felt it was above average and it's really hard to beat a historical place that has such a wonderful reputation in its past.
