Ely Overview

This is a small town bent around the tourist industry as it is an outlet to one of the top 100 places to visit in the world (or so the travel channel says). The population is around 2000 in the winter and 10,000 in the summer. It's a mile across making walking between shops easy. An experienced outdoorsman can easily come into the area pick up maps and supplies from a local outfitter and head into the boundary waters on their own. Someone less inclined to make a canoe trip on their own should contact an outfitter.

The local fishing and scenery is beautiful no matter what direction you go but varies by species of fish. Ask the locals for the location of "Dry Falls" for a good nature day hike and a great swim in pools formed by a small waterfall, (taking a canoe to the falls works as well and is quick).

Ask the local outfitters for good areas to plan trips through the boundary waters. Piragis is a good place that has nice people with a quaint library upstairs.

Visit the cafe next door to Piragis and Vertin's cafe and pub for good food at a decent price. Avoid the chocolate moose as it is over priced with little room to maneuver and no bathrooms nearby.
