Eltville is a small sleepy village that nestles on the bank of the Rhein. Life here is very sedate and extremely relaxed. Much quieter than some of the places just up the river this place is much less of a beacon for tourists and so could be classed as much more authentic Germany.
The focal point is the old castle that sits at the rivers edge and is surrounded by the same buildings that have probably stood there for hundreds of years.
Like most places along the Rhein there is plenty of locally made wine on offer with a number of vineyards having outlets dotted about the place.
The town is also famous for it's roses and gardens flourish everywhere – this combined with the presence of the castle ensured it was chosen for location shooting on the Sean Connery film 'The Name of the Rose' fact fans.
