Elipsos Trenhotel Reviews
A special Moving Hotel between Spain and Switzerland Aug 12, 2011
Well i was a bit confused whether to write a review about travel or my stay in this over night train as a hotel. Yes over night train! though some people wont agree with me still at this time i am pretty convinced to grade it as a hotel and a write something about it.
During my euro tour 2010, we planned alot of night trains quite similar to the plans of a common backpacker who has already invested a major portion of his travel budget while buying a pass for 15 consecutive days and the target is complete Europe(21 countries). Now the question arises....what is the best way i can utilize this pass and explore all of europe. and there was a simple answer to it... You can't do that!! but still there is no end to our wish lists.
So on the second day of our train pass we booked our first night train from Barcelona to Bern (Switzerland). It was a long 13 hrs journey in a night train Elipsos TrenHotel (BARCELONA - PERPIGNAN - GENEVA - BERN – ZURICH) which went all the way up from Spain to Switzerland via France.
Though we were in the pocession of first class pass but the only availablity of beds was in tourist class and we had no other choice than to avail it. In the first class they had double bed room while in tourist class it was four beds in a single cabin along with a wash basin provided in the cabin.
It was bit compact when four passenger were there but quite comfortable for two as one side could be used for sitting and other for the beds and beds were average neither too comfortable nor too bad. we were also provided with complimentary water and toiletries.
We boarded this train after a hectic tour of barcelona city and it took us hardly one hour to take our late lunch and go to sleep but to our good luck nobody joined us in the cabin and we were happy about that but of course one cannot stay happy all the time and around 2300 hrs from PERPIGNAN some where in France two Swiss teenagers may be around 17-18 years who were returning from their hike trip joined us. Though they mentioned the name of place then but now I have forgotten the place. Anyways it was not a long intro and we went to sleep again.
We got up around 0500 hrs next morning and got ready in no time since very few people were awake at that time. And there were two washroom at each end of the car. After some time our fellow teenagers also got up, we just had a brief discussion about their adventures and exchanged our experiences so far. Anyways we heard the announcement regarding our arrival at Geneva in a short while and we decided to move for breakfast in the on train restaurant.
We went to the on board restaurant, it was simple , clean and cosy restaurant with comfortable seats and a very refined staff.the restaurant rates were also very nominal considering the type of service being provided. We ordered a simple breakfast and meanwhile we reached Geneva train station and after a short stop we started moving again. As soon as we crossed Geneva, it was a superb view and we kept on taking pictures. It was like six in the morning and was a bit cloudy and everything was adding to the beauty of Geneva and its lake. To be honest it was a breakfast that I could never had even dreamed about. Just like those in ones whilst list that everybody has like a dream cruise, candle light dinner on a beach and diving in crystal clear waters…stuff like that.
But I really enjoyed the breakfast along with the beautiful landscape of the city around the lake and the weather playing its role to build up a perfect scenario.
After spending an hour in the restaurant we moved to the cafeteria. Again it had its own charm and was just like a bar , a long table with stools on one side and sales person taking the order. The people ate their on the availability of seat and different travellers mixing together sharing there stories. Though we already had breakfast but still we got a chance to meet a Swiss Family of three travelling back home after vacation trip to spain. They were quite helpful in sorting our trip in Switzerland. After having a nice discussion we moved back to our cabin at 0815 hrs as we had plan to drop off in Bern and start fro the Capital. After arranging up our stuff and last minute chat with our cabin mates, we reached ben and said good bye to Renfe TrenHotel (Elipsos).
