Elevador do Carmo Lisbon Reviews
Probably the most unique attraction of Lisbon Sep 14, 2010
The city of Lisbon has very few symbolic sights (Paris has the Eiffel Tower, London has the Tower Bridge, Rome has the Colloseum, Barcelona has the Sagrada Familia). One of the reasons for this is the earthquake that destroyed a large part of the city in 1755. If there is one unique attraction in Lisbon (apart from visiting a Fado bar of course), it’s the Elevador do Carmo, a neo gothic elevator. When you see it you’ll immediately think of the Eiffel Tower, which is no surprise since it was designed by the French Raoil Mesnier du Posnard, a student from Alexandre Gustave Eiffel.
Lines to get on the elevator (I think it costs around € 4 a person) are huge and if you must get on the elevator, expect to wait for at least half an hour. If it is just about the view, there are plenty of other spots in Lisbon that can offer that, one of them is the Castelo de São Jorge, which is located on the highest hill in Lisbon.
