Elevador da Bica Lisbon Reviews
Fun, but expensive Sep 18, 2010
The Elevador da Bica is a classic tram that is used to ride up a down a steep hill to the higher part of town: Bairro Alto. It can be reached by riding the train to central station Cais do Sodrém, for there it is a ten minute walk to Rua de São Paulo. Hidden away in a narrow alley is a tiny station where the Elevador drives up and down from.
It was first commissioned in the summer of 1892, and today it is still in use for those who are not in the mood to climb the steep streets to Bairro Alto. It’s great fun to use this tram, it’s a unique thing for Lisbon, but compared to other train- and tram rides it’s quite expensive (€ 2,- a person for a single ride)
From the exit point of the Elevador it’s a short walk to Miradoura de Santa Catarina, a lovely terrace from which you have an excellent view at the 25 de Abril Bridge that crosses the Tagus River.
