A lucky local find. Aug 13, 2017
I have effectively covered this rather excellent pub in the main body of the journal entry to which it is hopefully attached if I have got it right which is doubtful but this is a proper review. It is the Elephant and Castle in Ramsgate and is one of the Thorley portfolio. For those not familiar with the Thanet region of East Kent I should explain that Frank Thorley effectively owns it. An octogenarian now, he can still be seen at some ludicrous hour of the morning overseeing a refurbishment of his latest purchase. Technically his son Phil runs the show now but everyone knows who the real boss is. Frank is OK.

As always, in the interests of fair reporting I must state that I have known both father and son for many years, well enough to say hello to and have a drink with although I would never claim that we were friends.

On the first night of my latest Broadstairs excursion I needed to get to Ramsgate reasonably early as the website had not indicated what time you could check in until at my hotel and so I jumped a taxi over to Ramsgate which was where I had secured a bed for the night. Having checked in, I poked my head round the door of the hotel bar and it really was not my sort of place (hotel bars rarely are) and also I needed another packet of smokes. The charming young lady on the desk gave me directions to the local little Asian shop which was still open at that time and so I headed there and secured my nicotine fix. Next item on the agenda was finding a pub that was not going to involve a three day camel trek downhill to the seafront (which I know pretty well) and then the even more onerous task of getting back up the hill.

The shop was open as indicated, I got my cigarettes and asked the guy serving where the nearest pub was. No problem for him and he directed me the few hundred yards to the Elephant and Castle. It was immediately obvious that it was a Thorley pub as they have a very defined corporate identity but that was fine by me and in I wandered to what was very obviously a locals pub which still retained some old-style charm. I ordered my usual pint of Strongbow (cider) in a very pleasant bar. It was obvious there was some sort of party going on in the other bar and this indeed turned out to be the case with a pretty decent band playing.

As mentioned in the main journal entry they were preparing themselves for a cider festival at the end of the month and I got to sample a few of the early deliveries including a rhubarb cider from the Kent Cider Company which was possibly one of the tastiest ciders I have ever drunk and I have sampled quite a few. After a few pints the nicotine levels were approaching the critical and so I took off out to the rather pleasant beer garden area to the rear for a smoke where I was accosted by some young people who insisted I joined them in the party. Well, never one to refuse an invitation like that I duly obliged until tiredness, impending closing time and a very atypical bout of hunger got the better of me so planxty was back on the road.

Lovely bar, lovely cider and lovely people, what more could a man want? I realise it is not exactly Broadstairs which is very much my spiritual home but it is close enough and this was just a cracking little pub which I can only recommend highly. Great place.
