The Khmer Colsseum in Siem Reap Feb 26, 2013
Siem Reap is considered the dream destination to many cultural and history oriented travelers and adventurers which I believe is very true.Having visited Angkor Wat the main temple complex and the several surrounding monuments built during five glorious centuries the history of these monuments are still unsettled. The varied interpretations put forward by different guides about the history of these monuments amplifies the facts into fiction.Standing on the walls of the Elephant terrace adjoining the camp of the Leper king, Whose history seems shrouded and mystical, I opened my ears to these stories and my mind to imagine, the well sculpted 8 meter wide and 3 kilometre long terrace overlooking a vast expanse of open flat green space and seven three storey pagodas to visualise its grandeur and purpose.

The walls of the terrace were sculpted with figurines of the greatness of the king, elephant battles, human heroism and and the culture of the people.Special and separate Dias for the King and his consorts, ministers, dignitaries and space for the public overlooking an open arena suggests a Colosseum like atmosphere where great heroism was applauded as a sport. The Pagodas standing as separate private enclosure may have been the enclosures for the royal women. The vast expanse of several kilometers of open space also I imagined could have been the court where the army may have assembled for ceremonies or may be before an invasion, defence or victory celebration.

Whatever purpose it may have served it certainly sets fire to your fantasy and this I believe is the thrill which makes every traveller happy and enthuses his search...
The Kings seat
Dias for the ministers and Dignito…

Elephant Terrace Nov 09, 2013
Elephant Terrace is a platform that precedes the Royal palace. It is highly decorated and very beautiful. It is called “elephant terrace” for the figures of elephant heads on the corners of the structure. One spot, approximately in the middle of the structure has beautifully carved wall with elephants and their trunks coming down to the ground. It is definitely the place to take pictures between this trunks, but I resisted… Main stairs also have groups of three elephants with their trunks supporting the wall. Aside of elephants, wall is decorated with some kind of strong monkey warriors figures.
