Whale Watching From Reykjavic Jul 06, 2008
Having been disappointed at Husavik, decided to give it another try from Reykjavic. Even though we wwere leaving that day our flight wasn't until 5pm, so Elding running a 3 hour trip at 9am gave us plenty of time.

Went down on the day and just bough the tickets at the office at the harbour. Not much use to us, but they did offer a guarantee of a 2nd trip if you failed to see anything on your excursion.

Sailed out on time and first headed for the islands just off Reykjavic, which at that time of year were crammed full of nesting puffins. Have to be about the funniest birds to watch, as they hit the water like stones and then struggle to get back out.

Shortly after that we came across a school of porpoises ( not again I was thinking). Soon after though the first sighting of a whale, and the excitement spread through the boat. There were a couple of other boats out as well and they all converged to roughly the same spot, as the crew seem to know how long they will stay submerged and can work out the direction.

Wasn't long before a minke whale appeared followed closely nearby by another. We followed them for a while, before setting off out further and after about half an hour were rewarded with the sight of a humpback whale breaking the surface, before disappearing with what seemed to be a trademark last flick of it's tail fluke.

Hard to photograph, as you never knew when or what side of the boat it would come up again, but we got to follow it for about half an hour. Result !!!! :)

Boat itself was was spick and span, had plenty of lifejackets apparently, and offered waterproofs and wind cheaters. Had a few information points dotted about and a cafe where you could buy hot drinks.

With one eye on the clock, I was quite happy, ahving seen the whales for a good bit, that it pointed it's nose back to harbour, and arrived back right around midday.

Disembarking though, there is the slight irony of passing the 3 mothballed whaling ships in Reykjavik harbour, though I think now they have accepted the idea that there is as much money from tourism as they is from hunting the whales.
