El TeleferiQo Quito Reviews
Views from the Highest cable car of the world Aug 14, 2011
Whatever you do, make sure you get to go on the Teleferiqo in Quito, Ecuador. Quito is already the highest city above seawater in the world but the Teleferiqo takes you even higher to the site of the Pichincha (vulcanic mountain). The fare is only $8.50 for foreigners and it's a 7 min ride up. You start at 2880 meters and go all the way to 4500+ meters. Some may mistake the ride as the main attraction but it's actually when you get off. You get to walk into the mountains and climb to incredible heights. I didn't go with hiking gear (not necessary) but we walked to two peaks within an hour. Superbly gorgeous...there's even a chapel at the (top) base. Now, you can go serious hiking to the volcano Pichincha but bring some good cold-weather gear and hiking boots (plus water and such) as there are no stands selling anything. There are plenty of sightseeers in the weekends wandering around the great plains. But just getting to stand where the clouds hover is amazing and the view of Quito is ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!! Don't let height scare you...you won't realize it and you will be so mesmerized that you'll forget how high up you are. There is plenty of fresh air so no oxygen deprivation.

Fun detail: You can take pictures with llama in authentic gear for $0.50. It was fun...and the llamas were being tended by these cute ecuadorian kids.
