El Rancho Hotel & Motel Gallup Reviews
Good price, lovely character, unexpected treat Apr 16, 2010
Did not expect to see a place like this in the relative middle of nowhere. The owner or one of them as it seemed to be a family run business at the time was a lovely aging Hispanic ex marine who greeted us warmly and explained the layout of the place and the prices, which were cheap.
You had two options of stay. You could stay in the main hotel and have a suite or you could stay in the motel block adjacent to the main old building.
We opted for the Motel block as it was almost half the price of the suites and we weren't looking for lavish, just a bed.
The rooms were of good quality though and after a quick shower and change we went to there in-house restaurant for something to eat. The food was really nice with a heavy Mexican vibe to it with lots of spicy dishes to choose from whilst also catering more neutral pallets. The menu also gave you a description of the hotel along with a brief history and told you o all the famous people that had stayed there. The local area was used for a lot of Westerns back in the 40's and it was really interesting to read and good to soak up a bit of the ambiance. It was dead in there though. Either we'd missed the rush or we were late in. But the food was still good.
We were full after our meals and went down the road to the bar (when we could of gone into there bar) but that was because we wanted to see more of the area. I'd recommend this place to anyone passing through because although you had load of motels/hotels to choose from I'd bet you £50 that this was the one which had the most character.
