Semuc Champey, Guatemala
El Portal Semuc Champey Reviews
If you want to stay at Semuc Champey, you can't get any closer! Jul 11, 2009
Stumbled upon this cute little hostel out in the middle of nowhere, right outside the gate to Semuc Champey Park. I was worried there wouldn't be good places there because I couldn't find much online but this turned out to be great. You can't beat the location and the staff (it's Guatemalan owned & operated) is very friendly and helpful. They have inner tubes to rent and you can swim in the river right next to the cabins. The caving trip that's part of the full-day tour the hostel offers is an absolutely AWESOME experience, and I don't think you can fit it in with your Semuc Champey trip if you travel from Lanquin for the day.
Don't expect anything fancy as far as amenities. Even by hostel standards it's very basic; cold showers, electricity only from 6-10pm (and watch out 'cuz they don't adhere to the time too strictly - I was in the bathroom w/o my flashlight at 9:45 when suddenly everything went black!), no internet or phones, and rather hard uncomfortable beds, but at least they had beds and not just hammocks.
That said I really liked the place and would definitely stay there again if I were to revisit Semuc Champey. They have private rooms, dorms and space you can rent for camping. It was well worth the 35Q I paid for a dorm bed. It's a nice, peaceful place to hang out, and you can't beat the view.
