I would suggest planning a 3 day trip here. There are local hotels available around the lake and at a reasonable price. It can be done in one day but I wish I had more time here. The bus ride was about 2 hours from Medellin and cost about $22 American. They offer boat rides around the lake which is really beautiful also. You can see some of the bombed out Pablo Escobar properties. There is a church buried under the lake that can be seen during the ride. I would also suggest a good stretch before going up the rock.

El Peñón de Guatapé Oct 03, 2011
El Peñón de Guatapé is a giant rock in El Peñol Colombia. The location is approximately 86 km northeast of Medellín.The "Peñón" has 185 cubic metres (6,500 cu ft) of rock mass and it is 385 metres (1,263 ft) long, with an approximate weight of 10,000,000 tonnes!! Obviously, I was unaware of these facts until I did research but what I am absolutely sure about is the 644 stairs I had to climb to get to the top of this magnificent beast. The view is amazing, I felt like the Queen of the world up there. The Rock in El Peñol is just the tip of the ice burg b/c the location it resides in is amazing in itself (later review). If you are in this area, than this is a must-do activity because it truly is a gratifying experience and if you're anything like me it will help you work off the arepa, aguardiente chorizo, arequipe etc that you consumed while travelling around Colombia! :)
