El Monasterio on the rooftop Feb 15, 2014
El Monasterio was second hostel I visited in town. I made mistake by going to a hostel in town that I was sure had beds for the right price and it looked good from outside, but it was false advertising, so I looked around and I saw small advertising saying “El Monasterio Hostel” so I went for it. Large, kind of modern building had larger entrance gated from the floor to the ceiling but it is open during the day, so I proceeded to the elevator and found the hostel on the 6th floor.

Elevator takes you directly into hostel and in the front of reception. During the night they have roll bars that are securely locked but there is someone staying in the hostel responsible for opening it any time you need it. Well, while I was there reception goes to sleep around 10… so you are basically stuck…

Hostel is on the floor that has couple terraces and they do have awesome view. Right in the front of you is market square, very busy especially during the morning when lots of day workers wait for someone to get them a job in the field or on the construction site, and after 10 most of the shop and stall owners open their business. On the right side is a nice view of basilica’s blue cupolas. Sunsets are just stunning coming over the rooftops of the old city. That balcony has few chairs, good big umbrella against the sun and it is just a perfect place for sunset.

Second balcony is made into the kitchen that is very well equipped and also they have laundry machines. They have coffee all day long if you are into it and also there are two large containers with water that you can use as much as you want. Atmosphere in the hostel is very “homey”, almost like someone lives there and it is just renting extra rooms. There are no dorms on site, but I scored with the smallest room they had for only 10$ per night. Room pretty much just fits the bed, small commode, TV on the corner, fan and mirror on the wall. That is more than enough for me… I checked other rooms too, and they look very good, with good spacing and mostly bathrooms included. Bathrooms are very clean and there are two you can use if your room does not have it included. There is hot water, but of course there is also a trick to it, and you’ll have to play with the valves a bit and figure out how to get some heat.

Bed was totally fine, big and comfortable. In the common area they have some comfortable sofas where you can chill and check you internet. WiFi is good and available all the time.

Aside of weird entrance and getting out procedures, this place is totally cool and nice. It is owned by some local gentleman that probably had extra space and wanted to try something new. Making this place a bit younger and better signage would bring them a bit more clients…
