El Misti Hostel Botafogo Rio De Janeiro Reviews
Jan 14, 2008
From what I remember the hostel was ok. I know at the time they were refurbishing the place so it might be all different nowadays.
The atmosphere over there was great though and it had some things I found in pretty much every hostel I stayed at during my trip through South America... The bar inside the hostel, the special nights where you could get freshly baked pizza or bbq for a small fee, the great and helpfull staff that would take you out at night, ... I felt safe very quick as the area felt quite ok at daytime and I met people very fast so I had someone to go to the beach with and go out at night. Mostly guys so I kind of felt even safer hanging in the streets of Rio at night.
The hostel staff was mostly argentinan & australian. Everyone was very nice and helpfull... I ended up spending a week there as I liked it a lot. The place was not big at all and the common room was also entrance and reception, bar at night and breakfast room in the morning so it was very easy to meet people, which was great because I didn't feel like wandering around Rio alone at night...
The breakfast was free and very nice (fresh fruit juices, cakes, fruits, bread, ...). Only the dorms could have been a bit "refreshed" but I remember back then the place was being refurbished so that might have changed by now. I wished they had had AC instead of fans... that would have helped keeping the mosquitos away in january - very hot, humid and full of mosquitos...
What I liked a lot with that place (and am still thankfull today) is that I was able to leave a whole bag full with things I wouldn't need on my trip - since I went from 2 to 6 months... shoes, books, warm clothes, ... they offered to keep a bag with my name on it and I would just have to pick it up when I'd be back to Rio for the flight home. Well six months later I went to pick up the bag and it was still there, no one had touched it. The australian girl working there remembered me and she told me she had been keeping an eye on my stuffs all those months knowing I would be back to pick it up... Extremely nice:D
As for the services they can send a taxi to pick you at the airport, drive you to Corcovado or Sugar loaf. Back then they could also book you footbal tickets for small matches at Maracana stadium.
