El Mirador Vacation Guide
El Mirador is the biggest Mayan City discovered yet in the Peten region of Guatemala. Although the complex of ruins was discovered in the 60's, the revolution in Guatemala kept archaeologists from seriously excavating the ruins until the last few decades. The site is now being actively excavated although no roads lead to the ruins. Those wishing to visit must walk 2 days in subtropical jungle and walk 2 days back out unless you wish to take a helicopter.
Those visiting the site will see ruins under excavation. Much of the city still lies beneath dirt and trees, though archaeologists have some sites or partial sites exposed. If you visit during the right season you should be able to see archaeologists at work.
