Restaurant Touristico - El Huatakay Apr 18, 2014
Following our rafting trip on the Urubamba, our group headed to the town of Ollantaytambo for lunch. There is only one way in and out of this tiny town and traffic jams are common. Starting from the main plaza we walked through the narrow streets and came across some Inca walls, as well as gates & doorways built in the typical trapazoidal construction by the Incas. Down another shorter street, through a gate down by the Urubamba River we entered a lovely garden and lawn which was actually once part of an Inca terrace complete with retaining stone wall. Inside this terraced garden area were tables, shaded by bright yellow umbrellas, which had been reserved for our group and here a buffet lunch would be served.

"Restaurant Turistico Huatakay" in Ollantaytambo --- not to be confused with another much-publicized restaurant with a very similar name --- "El Huacatay" --- features buffet meals with many more choices for us than I can remember. But the lunch included chicken, alpaca, salads, fruit bowl, potato dishes, dessert, soft drinks/sodas, beer, and bottled water. Everyone seemed pleased with their meal. Oddly enough, Chef Nacho Selis, who had previously orchestrated and prepared our Pachamanca Feast at Sol y Luna Lodge's Wayra Ranch, was also the chef this day at El Huacatay. Chef Nacho is a well-known personality in this area of the Sacred Valley and has gained a good bit of celebrity further abroad.

The day was beautiful and sunny and we enjoyed our time here. For my part, I could have spent the rest of the afternoon just relaxing here.

There was also a small gift shop at the back of a building next to the buffet tables --- the teenagers on our tour were pretty thrilled with the possibility of finding a souvenir or two here.

After lunch we were off to explore the Inca ruins of Ollantaytambo which were quite close by.
