El Hostalito Dec 02, 2012
The black garage door beautified with variety of flyers, stickers and posts hides one of the nicest hostels in San Cristobal de las Casas. After not being satisfied with a previous hostel, I searched around for a hostel that feels like home, where people are like friends and which is closer to the areas of the city that I like. I found everything in this small hostel that I totally accidentally stumbled upon (I was reading some posts that were on the door when I found that behind the door is a hostel…) is actually part of kind of organized refuge for bicycle riders. Entrance is through garage that now doubles as a bicycle repair center for visitors, and most of the walls are covered with maps of the possible bicycle paths over central, north and south America.

Accommodation is in 4-5 private rooms and excellent small dorm on the second floor, without bunk beds and with nice metal lockers for every person in the room. Price is on low side and for 100pesos you get bed in the dorm and free breakfast. WiFi is available all over the hostel (they also have a desktop computer for people that don’t have their own), and they have breakfast made of fresh fruits, cereals and fresh juices. Kitchen is very well equipped, and you can always see someone preparing meal or two. Two blocks away from the hostel there are few fresh produce shops with a great milk cooperative that has all kinds of fresh milk produce. They are very nature conscious, recycling everything they can and being aware of their surroundings. Dorm has very comfortable beds with nice and clean traditional blankets and it is warm and cozy place. Living area is concentrated around the fire place that burns any time someone is cold, and it has very comfortable sofas. TV with lots of new DVD-s gives some entertainment next to the row of books and travel magazines. On the back of the building nice patio hosts couple of hammocks and it is a nice place to chill, smoke and get nice stories.

Hostel is very clean, hot water is constantly available and there are enough restrooms for everyone. Hostelito is just a block away from the main walking street Guadalupe, and in this area there is couple of super nice small cafes, and restaurants. Close to the hostel there are few good night clubs and bars, so you don’t need any kind of transportation to enjoy your day and night experience.

Girl that is running the hostel was a perfect friend you would love to meet anywhere you go. She organized small gatherings on the rooftop with nice grill and finger food and most important, with great people from all over the world. I did prolonged my stay in that place and called few other friends to join me (there is no much space in hostel so my friends had to come on open bed basis) in El Hostelito.

Almost every year I get around San Cristobal de las Casas, and I have been in 4-5 different hostels in town. For now El Hostalito is the only one that I would LOVE to visit and experience again. This place is not just a sleep-and-go, but more of a home away from home.
