Not the hippest, but inexpensive, nice, and hip enough for some Jun 06, 2009
El Hostal is on 1ra. Avenida Sur No. 8, which means it's on 1ra (Primera or First) Ave. The Avenues in the downtown area run 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. north/south. The Calles (streets) run 1st, 2nd, etc east/west. Anyway, El Hostal was a nice place, inexpensive with free breakfast. You can get a dorm, or if there are two of you, a two person room. If you're tall, the bunk beds in the dorms are restricting. I liked the place and the people who operate it. It's very clean, airy, and the shared bathrooms are nice. If you go, say hello to the parrot for me. Oh, and it's accross the street from "Cafe no se" which is one of THE night spots in town, a cool bar. Also, next door is "Y tu pina tambien", a great little coffee shop. The central square is about 6 blocks away. Antigua is quite safe. I saw young women walking around alone after dark fairly often.

If you get a room on the street at El Hostal, it can be a little noisy because of the bar. However, if you go to the bar and have a few drinks, the streetside room will be fine. But they have inside rooms as well.

There are a couple of reasons not to go to El Hostal. If you're really into connecting with other young people, I believe The Black Cat is more popular. Walking by, I always saw people hanging out in front. El Hostal is a little quieter in that regard. Another thing is that if you're Jewish, I believe there's a good hostel (forgot the name) that caters especially to you, but you probably know that already.

Best hostel in town! Jan 11, 2008
Hot showers, clean bathrooms, comfortable beds, free delicious breakfasts, and friendly owners… what more could we ask for? We stayed for 10 days and loved every minute of it. It ended up being our home away from home!

We spent the first night in a room with 5 beds and met some great people from all over the world. Lockers are available in those rooms for important personal items. On the second night a private room with 2 beds came available so we decided to pay a few dollars more per night for that room. Both rooms we stayed in were spacious and comfortable.
