Tapas galore! Nov 15, 2017
Although we have passed this popular restaurant many times, we only recently got around to visiting – with a friend for a post-match meal. It is ideally situated for this, being only a stone’s throw from St James’ Park, and consequently tends to get very busy on match days. On this occasion we were lucky to get a table in the bar area (the main restaurant areas, both ground floor and upstairs, were full) but found in fact that this was probably the nicest place to sit in as it was cosier, although service was maybe slower as a result.

The menu here consists almost entirely of tapas dishes, and there is a wide selection. We chose five to share between the three of us, plus some bread, and found it enough to satisfy us. Among the best dishes, in my opinion, were the Gambas al ajillo (king prawns fried in olive oil with chillies and garlic), the Papas bravas and the Ropa vieja (‘a Moorish casserole of beef, chickpeas and aubergines flavoured with allspice and cloves’). We also had calamari and tortilla. With a good bottle of wine and one of sparkling water we paid £55 – not bad at all for a tasty meal in such a central and popular spot. We will come again!
