Two Birds with one Order... Aug 19, 2014
A surprising splash of elegance in an out-of-the-way location. The establishment resides on the ground floor of Hotel Vestmannaeyjar in Heimaey and takes its name from the owner. Our group chose this spot for one reason – puffin was on the menu! Beyond our puffin there would be several unexpected bonuses.

Einsi Kaldi exudes charm with a modern, artsy interior, but it isn’t snobby. We felt the atmosphere pervaded a refreshing calmness, though perhaps that was due to our being the only folks seated. You could tell from the menu descriptions (and prices) this was going to be a first class meal and we ordered with abandon.

I settled on lobster soup, to be followed by a smoked puffin and guillemot combination. Killing two birds with one stone, so to speak. It was going to be a round robin of exotica, with Laura ordering minke whale and Jodi some horse! Like previous dining experiences in Iceland, service was slow (still surprising since we were the only customers), but at least this time it wasn’t “casual” – our waitress was polite, professional and intimate with the menu. Just slow, lol.

The opulent presentation of my soup hinted I was in for a culinary masterpiece and wow, was it ever delicious. After savoring my soup the entrées arrived and with “bite for a bite” trades we spanned quite a few new dishes. The puffin was okay. The first bite was positive, but as you chewed a gamey flavor took over and it tasted like giblets. The guillemot, on the other hand, was brilliant – struck me as a magnificent combination of bacon and ham at the same time! Jodi and I agreed the horse was also yummy, but our panel of experts voted minke whale ‘so-so’.

The chef came out as we were finishing to make sure we were pleased...a nice touch.

Just as we were finishing a few customers filtered in. To top things off, one of the entrants was the sax playing boat captain from our cruise earlier. A perfect, fun ending to a rather terrific dining experience.
